‘Transformers’ Roll Out In New ‘Magic the Gathering’ Crossover

Well, I think I can safely say I didn’t have this on my “2022 Magic the Gathering Bingo” card. I mean, sure we knew it had to happen eventually. I just thought it would be as a Secret Lair, not as actual cards in Brothers’ War.

For those that don’t know what I’m talking about, or that the title of this article didn’t give it away, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro announced that the Autobots and Decepticons are coming to Magic the Gathering later this year. They will be mechanically unique cards that will be a part of their Universes Beyond line (like this month’s Warhammer 40K Commander decks). These cards can be pulled in Set boosters and Collector boosters, as well as having one in every bundle.

Each one of the characters is represented in their original G1 animated series version, as as well an alternate art version representing their Shattered Glass variants. For those who aren’t familiar, Shattered Glass is a parallel time line in which the Autobots are the villains and the Decepticons the heroes. I’ve always been a fan of alternate stories like that, as they give the writers something fun to do with established characters that they normally would never get the chance to do.

As far as the actual cards go, they look amazing. The art on both versions look sweet. Mechanically, they don’t appear to be too overpowered for mechanically unique cards (which is a plus in my book) and they look like they will make for some fun commander decks. The “More Than Meets The Eye” ability makes for a fun way of representing the transforming aspect of Transformers. I have a sneaking suspicion that “Living Metal” may be a slight spoiler for something coming in Brothers’ War.

My biggest concern is simply going to be the availability of these cards. As I said prior, they are available in Set boosters, Collector boosters, and one is guarenteed in the bundles. I would assume the Shattered Glass variants will be more skewed towards the Collector boosters. That is fine as I personally like the G1 art better (not that the Shattered Glass ones aren’t sweet). If they are 1 or 2 per box, they will be expensive to try completing a complete set. If they go back to the ratio of the Stranger Things variants that were in the Streets of New Capenna then it won’t be too bad.

Hopefully we’ll hear more about them in the coming weeks. On Tuesday (October 4th), Wizards of the Coast is hosting a 30th Anniversary announcement stream to lay the roadwork for the rest of the year. I don’t necessarily think they’ll mention the Transformers cards, but I do think we’ll hear more about collecting Brothers’ War and where to find what cards.

What do you all think? Are you excited for the war for Cyberton to be crossing over into Magic the Gathering? Or are you already burnt out with Universes Beyond?
