Enter The ‘Dark Tournament’ In 2024

This one is a little late, and we do apologize for that. Between wanting to seriously dissect this information and the holidays, time sort of slipped by from us. But we digress. UVS Games recently made a little video showcasing their first full booster set of 2024 - Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament.

Releasing on February 23, 2024, the Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament will be the first time UniVersus has visit the Spirit Realm since 2019! The set features 160 brand new cards, including 16 new fighters from the acclaimed anime arc. Along with the new cards, the set includes 33 “Time Shifted” cards that are reprints of cards from the original Yu Yu Hakusho booster set in the new frame style, as well as “Retro Reprints”. The “Time Shifted” reprints feature the new set logo and are playable in the Standard format, while “Retro Reprints” retain their original set logo and will only be legal in formats where the original set is legal.

Unlike previous sets that included 11 cards per pack, Dark Tournament will release with 12 cards per pack. Packs will include 1 character card, 1 reprint card, and 10 cards from the set’s various rarities (6 commons, 3 uncommons, and 1 rare, ultra rare, or secret rare). Unlike previous sets, XR cards will only appear as Characters. The set will however feature 6 Ultra Rare cards featuring alternate art versions, while Secret Rares will feature borderless kanji versions. Chrome Rares will be returning with 4 alternate art character cards limited to 100 copies of each.

There was a massive tease for a Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament - Wish Tournament. This will be an invite only webcam event that players can attend by winning their local release events. We won’t have any details on the Wish Tournament until December, but we do have some information on the prize support for the release events.

The release events will be sealed events, similar to those for My Hero Academia: Jet Burn, with players building their decks from boosters. The event’s prizing will feature a unique, exclusive playmat, as well as an alternate-art promo of Urameshi Perseverance. Winners will not only get their invite to the Wish Tournament, but they will get a special Victory-foil version of the promo card.

We unfortunately missed out on the original playmat from the first set all those years ago, so we are beyond excited to see a new playmat that we might be able to actually snag.

Lastly, we have a small gallery of advance card previews that we were shown. All of these cards look absolutely stunning though we find ourselves a little perplexed by the reuse of the original Yusuke Urameshi character art for his second character card. We were told that all of these are the final images, so let’s hope this was just a case of what the IP owner wanted and not a slight drop in quality. After all, this set has been talked about and dreamt about for literal years.

Anyone that has been following us for any amount of time will know that this is a franchise that is near and dear to our heart, so we are beyond excited for it. So we want to hear from you! Let us know on any of our various social platforms what your thoughts are.

Until next time!
