‘Miniatures of the Multiverse’

The Late Night Players is proud to announce our first event series - Miniatures of the Multiverse!

So what exactly is this so-called Miniatures of the Multiverse event? That is an incredibly good question and one I’ve been asking myself for the last couple of months. The short answer is that is a celebration for all things miniature wargaming. The long answer is something a bit complex but will be amazing when it is done.

A short time ago, I was looking at a box on my shelf for a game that I gave a pretty harsh review to. Without naming the game or it’s publisher/designer, I will say I bought into the hype on it from one of my favorite YouTube channels without much thought and it bit me in the butt. Still, I kept it. I decided I wanted to give the game a second look, but see how far it’d come in the few year since its release. Needless to say, I felt the same, if not more annoyed by it.

I began writing my Second Look review on it when I realized I’d spent so much time and energy on what was essentially the most negative experience I’ve had in this hobby that I’m absolutely enamored with. There is an entire multiverse of miniature systems out there to explore, why waste time on one that wasn’t worth that time to begin with?

With that in mind, I began breaking down a months-long event to celebrate the miniature wargaming hobby. I wanted to focus on any and all miniature games, no matter how big or small they were. The problem is that with that aforementioned multiverse of games out there, I was going to have to plot it in a way that made sense. So taking a cue from the most elaborate film series of all time, I have broken the event into various Phases. Each Phase will run the course of a couple of weeks to a month, coming together in a massive coverage of all things miniature gaming at Gen Con 2023 in August.

So how are these Phases going to be organized and broken down? I have arranged the upcoming content in five categories for easy viewing and reading:

  • Phase 1: Superheroes/Comic Books

  • Phase 2: Science Fiction

  • Phase 3: Video Games/Multimedia IP

  • Phase 4: Fantasy

  • Phase 5: Miniature Agnostic

I’ve selected a handful of games across each of those broad categories that I think show off the wide variety of lore and gameplay these games offer, from the grim dark to the whimsical. With each game selected, we’ll do a review of where the game stands today; how to get into the game; painting/assembly tutorials; and a battle report showing off the reason we love that game. Sprinkled in will be various articles and videos about the hobby in general, including tool reviews, paint comparisons, and so on.

It goes without saying that this is a massive and lofty project. I hope you all will find it as fun as we did, though.

Phase 1 will begin in May when we take a look and compare the two biggest superhero based miniature games on the market. Who will come out on top with the best gameplay and miniatures? Which do we like best? Did we hate both of them? Who is to say? You’ll just have to wait and see.
